Maj. Charles Douglas Smith, U.S. Army (Ret.), 85, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, at 11:30 a.m., surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.
Born on November 19, 1940, in Paris, Texas, Charles proudly served in the United States Army for 22 years. During his time of service, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Terry, who became his wife on May 13, 1961. They had recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
After Charles retired from the military as a major, he continued his service to others through his work with the United States Postal Service until his retirement.
Charles was a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family. Known for his strength and quiet determination, he also had a softer side that grew more visible with age. He loved telling jokes, sharing stories, and bringing laughter to those around him. His warm smile and gentle laugh will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Smith; his son, Don Smith; and his daughter, Sharon Mendenhall. He was a proud grandfather to Ashlee Washer, Trevor Mendenhall, and Kyle Mendenhall.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and dedication to family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us, his memory will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared throughout his life.
We will miss you, Charles Douglas Smith, always known as Dad and Grandpa.
The family will receive condolences on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Palmer Mortuary from 10am to 11am. The chapel will depart and family and friends are asked to meet directly at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park for the interment with military honors at 11:30am.
