Dominga Tobias Gaitan, a beacon of love and resilience, passed away on April 25, 2025, in Seguin, Texas, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on March 3, 1946, in Caldwell County, Dominga's life was a tapestry woven with devotion to family, hard work, and joyful memories.
Dominga’s life is a testament to the strength of love and commitment. She met her husband, Amado Mendoza Gaitan Sr., while working the fields picking cotton, and from that moment it was love at first sight. Together, they built a beautiful life, celebrating over 61 years of marriage. In 1985, they opened Gaitan Paving, where Dominga played a vital role not only as the first business secretary but also helping out in the field, showcasing her extraordinary work ethic and commitment to her family.
As a nurturing and devoted housewife, Dominga raised ten children—Amado Jr., Gilbert, Linda, Dominga, Adam, Elizabeth, Augustin, Daniel, Susie and an addition to their large family, Elvis—with endless love and encouragement. She instilled a strong sense of possibility in them, always reminding them that they could achieve anything their hearts desired. Family was everything to her, and she thrived during family get-togethers, always bringing joy and warmth into every moment. Dominga welcomed all her sons and daughters-in-law as her own, making each one feel cherished and part of the fabric of her heart.
Her culinary delights were legendary within her family, and she loved cooking for them and was especially a professional at making tortillas. Dominga had a passion for bringing everyone together—especially during cherished outings to Market Square in San Antonio during Fiesta Week, where she and Amado would relish the vibrant atmosphere and delicious food. She loved all kinds of music, with a particular fondness for Tejano tunes, and nothing brought her more joy than hearing her husband sing to her.
Dominga’s faith was central to her life. She had a close relationship with God, finding solace and strength in prayer. Her spirit of adventure led her to travel, with memorable trips to Las Vegas and many cherished road trips filled with laughter and love. Her gentle heart, nurturing nature, and love for her family left a profound impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Dominga is survived by her loving husband, Amado Mendoza Gaitan Sr.; her nine children, Amado Gaitan Jr. and wife Josie, Gilbert Gaitan, Linda Gaitan, Dominga Andrade and husband Joe, Adam Gaitan, Elizabeth Carrillo and husband Roger, Daniel Gaitan, Susie Gaitan, and Elvis Gaitan; 26 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Samantha Zamora.
