Obituary

On Thursday April 16, 2026, Doro Packlick died at home from cancer.

Doro was born in West Berlin, Germany. She lived there until 1998. Her second language was French. She later studied English, Latin, Spanish and Portuguese. With her family or on school trips, she spent time in Denmark, Austria, East Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Israel.

Doro was an accomplished piano student. In the late 1970's she played guitar, bass, and keyboards in various West Berlin punk rock bands. She also had a beautiful singing voice. During a school choir trip to England, she stayed with a family in Scorton, Yorkshire, UK. This family, the Coates, invited Doro and her family to visit the next Summer. During Doro's teenage years she would spend her Summer vacations with the Coates family. That is how she became fluent in English, with a Yorkshire accent..

She graduated from the Free University of Berlin with a degree in English Literature and Economics. Her graduation thesis was on the role of the Gentleman in Jane Austin's novels.

During and after her time in school, Doro worked as a tutor in English, Business English and German. She also worked for years translating television and film scripts from English to German Her last job was working as the administrative assistant to the vice president of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics.

Doro met Tom Packlick in 1986, through an activity known as Mail Art. They shared a passion for music, and a deep appreciation for the British radio personality, John Peel. Doro listened to Peel on the Armed Forces Network in Berlin. Tom listened to Peel on the BBC World Service via shortwave radio. They married in 1998, and lived in Seguin, Texas.

To paraphrase Doro's cousin, Annette Arnez: "Doro was at home and she was surrounded by Tom, the cats, her books, her garden and a caring nurse."
