Joseph Fredrick “Joe Fred” Mikulenka, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather, entered eternal rest at his home in Seguin, Texas on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Joe Fred was born February 8, 1943 to Fredrick Joseph and Mary Margaret (Fillinger) Mikulenka in San Antonio, where he grew up and graduated from McArthur High School and earned his BA at St. Mary’s University. Growing up, he worked with his parents who owned the Broadway 50/50 restaurant. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1966-1970. It was during this time of service that he met the love of his life, Ursula Kawelo in Oahu, Hawaii. He retired after 20 years as Operations/Purchasing Manager for Dot Metal Industries.
After retirement, Joe Fred & Ursula traveled to many places within the United States as well as many countries around the world. They also took several trips back to Hawaii to visit with their Ohana.
Joe Fred is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ursula Kawelo Mikulenka; sons Ray Barrett, Eugene Barrett, Chad Barrett (wife Tammy); daughters Malia Stanush (husband Blayne) and Taleen Lundale (husband Andy); 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his loyalty, honesty, hard work ethic, sense of humor, patience, and love for his family. To Joe Fred, a single book at a time was simply never enough. He was a proud literary multitasker, always keeping at least five books active, bookmarked, and nearby.
Joe Fred would want to be remembered as a man of deep faith who was blessed to live a loving, full and happy life. His daily prayers always included his gratitude for his parents, family, friends and the simple blessings of each new day.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all his doctors, the wonderful staff at DaVita Seguin Dialysis and a special thank you to GRMC Hospice for their care of Joe Fred during his last few days at home.
