Toribio Jose Mendoza, affectionately known as Toby, passed away on September 4, 2025, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 88. Born on November 20, 1936, in Woodsboro, Texas, Toby was a cherished member of his community and a beloved family man.
Toby's educational journey began with his baptism at St. Therese Church on February 12, 1939, which marked the start of a life filled with faith and devotion. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962, experiencing camaraderie and discipline that would shape his character throughout his life.
After his military service, Toby dedicated years to his career, initially working for the Texas Rendering Plant before retiring from Tyson Foods. His work ethic was commendable, characterizing him as a dependable and steadfast individual in his community and workplace.
Toby took joy in the simplest pleasures of life, expressing a profound love for music and dance. He was often seen with his cherished portable CD player, always prepared with the perfect selection of tunes that resonated with his soul, embodying a spirit of joy and happiness.
On June 12, 2017, Toby married Anselma Mendoza after a loving companionship of 22 years. Their marriage was a testament to their commitment and devotion to one another. Together, they raised a family that expanded to include from a previous marriage, sons Victor Mendoza (Lupe), Toby Mendoza Jr. (Pat), Joe Mendoza, and Adrian Mendoza (Dianne), along with daughters Theresa Mendoza and Connie Mendoza. Toby was a proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren and a brother to Anita Juarez Wright (Donnie), leaving a remarkable legacy of love that will endure through generations.
The Mendoza family also remembers Toby’s connection to his stepfamily. He dearly embraced his stepson Billy Sampley (Sonia) and stepdaughters Diana Kozic, Brenda Bender, and Cynthia Washburn, who brought joy and companionship to his life. He welcomed them into his heart along with their children, which consisted of 13 step-grandkids, 15 step-great-grandkids, and 9 great-great-grandkids, further enriching his life. Including a special bond that he held with Tanner Walker.
Toby's departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his loved ones. He was predeceased by several family members, including his parents, Manuel and Ana Morales Mendoza, siblings Gregoria Hernandez, Josefa Aldana, Adelina Bentancourt, Virginia Cano, Cipriana Luna, Meliton Morales, and Rotilio Mendoza, as well as Agustin Mendoza and stepdaughter Pamela Lynn Sampley.
Toby Mendoza will be remembered not only for his contributions to his family and community but also for his unwavering spirit and zest for life. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with warmth, music, and love.
Visiting hours will be at Palmer Mortuary on Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 9am to 10am. A funeral memorial service will begin at 10am and all services will conclude in the Palmer Mortuary chapel and a private cremation will follow.
