Alberto Hernandez

February 8, 1937 — June 4, 2020

Alberto “Beto” Flores Hernandez, born February 8, 1937, lifelong resident of Seguin, departed this life on June 4, 2020, at age 83. He was one of four sons of Pedro Hernandez, Sr. and Julia Flores.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Sr. and Julia, brothers Pedro Jr. and Juan, and former spouse, Maria Isabel Cruz. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rosemary from whom he was inseparable; brother Adrian; three children – sons Mario and Oscar (Anna), and daughter Grace (Kevin); four grandchildren – Hannah, Erica Shane, Autumn Marie and Stephanie Rose; and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Albert was a tall, strong and proud man, working for many years with Guadalupe County before retiring. He worked hard to provide the kind of life he wanted for his family and achieved whatever he set his mind to. He was open and candid about ideas and causes he supported. He always had constructive advice or an opinion to give his sons Mario and Oscar, solicited or not. He was steadfast in his pride for them and their successes, as with his daughter Grace, and the life that she forged.

He enjoyed recounting stories and jokes from his youth and work, some funnier than others to those listening, but that never stopped him from sharing them anyway. When asked a question, he would pause momentarily to reflect upon it, and then reply with the most thoughtful, genuine and humorous response you could possibly expect. Most couldn’t help but be entertained listening to him, laughing throughout, sometimes muddling the punchline in his endearing way.

He realized his dream of living in the countryside upon his retirement. While still working and living in Seguin, he purchased a countryside property and little by little built his retirement home which he enjoyed immensely until his passing.

Albert appreciated the simple things in life, like spending time with family, barbecuing with his son Oscar and going on drives with his wife Rosemary that ended with dinner out at his favorite restaurant. He also enjoyed visiting and dining out with his daughter Grace and her husband Kevin (no matter how weird the restaurant or cuisine), or relaxing with Rosemary outside early in the mornings reminiscing about the old days– surveying and enjoying the fruits of his labor and the joys of nature.

Albert was always active, even in retirement, piddling in and around his home, finding creative ways to achieve his vision or solve a problem, collecting and tinkering with project cars, helping his son Mario with his motorcycles and puttering around the garden. He would always comment “wish I could cut those limbs and cut the grass like you” and Mario would always respond “Pops, just remember you’re the brain and I’m the muscle”.

He loved a good television show, and listening to and singing along with his favorite Ranchera songs. On occasion, if you were fortunate, you would be graced with his rendition of his favorite song, “El Jinete”, as a solo, or as a duet with his son Mario.

His legacy is that of a kind, joyful and generous soul who was always ready to help anyone in need. His charismatic nature and sense of humor inevitably generated small talk leading to life-long friendships wherever he went. He will be missed.
