George De Long

January 29, 1921 — December 11, 2019

George Ferrell De Long of Seguin, Texas entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the age of 98. He was born to Fay Tony De Long and Mary Applewhite Scott De Long on January 29, 1921 in Okeene, Oklahoma.

George Ferrell, who was called Ferrell by his family and George by others was raised in Luling, Tx and graduated from LulingHigh School.  He always joked he spoke Lulingese and loved to eat at The City Market.

He was a fun loving, friendly man with a great sense of humor who never met a stranger.  He was also a very generous man when it came to his time and money.

He was a member of the greatest generation and served during WW2.  He served in the Army and was stationed in Shanghai and Burma.  When he moved to Seguin, he was a charter member of the Geronimo VFW.

He retired as an air traffic controller and even had an egg farm.  When he moved to Seguin, he was Navarro’s Tax Assessor/Collector and also a real estate broker.

For all those that knew him, he loved to play tennis and was always ready and willing to teach anyone that wanted to learn the game.  His other past times were taking trips to the coast to body surf, attend church and sing.  He loved to cook chili and perfected making cheese enchiladas and hot sauce.  He also made the best fudge and was always expected to make his fudge for family gatherings.

The family would like to thank those who helped care for dad in his final months with Caring Seniors: Drew, Melody, Valerie and Adriana. Also, Kevin Avery. The compassion that these individuals demonstrated was amazing. The family could not have had dad at home, as he wished, without their caring help.

George is preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife of 54 years, Margaret Jeanne De Long; brother, Jack Melvin De Long and sister, Marilyn De Long Evans.

He is survived by his children, Barbara Jeanne De Long, Ferrell De Long and wife Madeline, James David De Long, Betty De Long Mills and husband Bennie; his sisters, Ava Nell Cheatham, Janice Cobb; grandchildren, Domenic De Long, Joseph De Long, Joshua De Long, Ashley "Nikki" O'Shay, Whitney McKain; 7 great-grandchildren and a host of other extended family and friends.
