Mark Lucas

May 31, 1960 — January 26, 2021

Kingsbury, Texas

Mark Alan Lucas of Kingsbury, Texas, surrounded by his family went to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the age of 60 after battling several illnesses for many years.   Mark was born to Sherwood Lucas and Florence Irene (Jones ) Lucas on May 31, 1960 in Mercedes, Texas, missing them terribly every day of his life after their passing.

Remember and cherishing his memory is his loving wife, Jennifer Jernigan-Lucas of 25 years together – Jennifer and Mark would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on January 27, 2021; his brother Luke and his wife Sandi Lucas and their children – Stephanie and husband Josiah Bullock, Samantha and her husband Dustin Peterson and their two children, Shannon and Samuel Vollmer and Shyenne Lucas; his sister Thelma and her husband Joe Hess and their children - Lisa Hess and her children, Joe and his wife Elaine Hess and their child, Letha Hess (deceased) and her children, Sharlene and her husband Randy Hohmann and their children. Mark is also survived by many close cousins to numerous to name, but whom he loved dearly and were always in his heart and on his mind – Mark spoke of them frequently and fondly and missed them very much in the last years of his life as he was unable to go see them due to the seriousness of his illnesses.   Mark also is lovingly remembered by his father in-law Sam Jernigan, his sister in-law Lisa Strawn and her children – Ford Strawn and West Strawn and his wife Megan Strawn and their child, his brother in-law Craig Jernigan and his children – Ashley Jernigan and her children, Christen Jernigan and her children and Kevin Jernigan, his sister-in-law Nancy Holdorf and her children Anne Polston and her children and Sandra Holdorf and her children.  Mark also had a special love in his heart for his mother-in-law – Elizabeth (Schatzie) Jernigan (deceased) and missed her very much during the last years of his life.

Mark was his happiest when mowing grass on his new John Deere zero turn mower (which he also used as his transportation around Sam’s Double Bar J Ranch - where Mark resided for the past 25 years - and to go visit the neighbors to mow even more grass since he could no longer drive his truck due to his illnesses).  Mark would weed eat every where possible on the ranch and the neighbors’ yards to keep all of the yards looking sharp – we considered Mark the “Weedeater King”.  Mark also loved shelling pecans from his father in-law’s pecan trees (if the squirrels did not get them all).  Mark’s best work memories are when he was working as lead in the produce department at the Luling H.E.B. and then as produce manager at the Lowe’s Market in Poteet prior to the escalation of his illnesses.   Mark loved the outdoors and enjoyed anything that meant he could be outside working or even hunting and fishing on the ranch and ranch related properties.  Mark also loved working with Sam on the ranch assisting with fencing, cattle work, tractor work and all of what needed to be done at the ranch.   Mark’s exceptional physical strength was evident all during his life. Mark had incredible inner strength from the time of his premature birth at 2 ½ lbs and throughout his childhood and adult life. But his true inner strength was most evident during the last years of his life while battling his illnesses and never giving up no matter how his illnesses affected his physical and mental state. Mark is remembered as a devoted husband, loved family member and a great pal to those he befriended.  Mark will be missed by all that knew and loved him.  Now he is mowing and weed eating every where he can in Heaven!
